History of the Building
53 Columbus: preserving Housing and Building a New Residence
For Advancing Justice – ALC, our location in Chinatown is a major tale unto it self. While the very first mixed-use, affordable housing co-op in bay area, our building has offered as being a model for preserving affordable housing within the town and protecting renters’ legal rights.
In 2005, the building found at 53 Columbus had been in the verge of demolition. The building was in fact obtained years before because of the San Francisco’s Community university region when it comes to growth of a campus that is new. Once the building had been obtained, the residents had been guaranteed they might be relocated into replacement housing. But given that demolition loomed, the region offered just short-term moving support.
Every one of the building’s sixty residents had been low earnings, numerous were elderly, & most had been non-English speaking.
